The Peters Colony of Texas: A History and Biographical Sketches of the Early Settlers, Connor, Seymour V.

The Peters Colony of Texas: A History and Biographical Sketches of the Early Settlers
Austin, Texas: The Texas State Historical Association: 1959: First Edition: Hard Cover: Very Good: Fair: Frances Pearce: Bumping and light wear to the corners and spine ends. Binding tight and square. The dust jacket has edge tears and chips, a long tear along the front flap fold, and some moisture spots to both panels and spine. No moisture evidence to the book's covers. The jacket is protected now in a clear Mylar archival sleeve. 473 pages with Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with maps (including endpaper maps), charts, and vignettes by Frances Pearce. From the dust jacket: The Peters Colony was the first and largest empresario grant made by the Republic of Texas, the land policies for which comprise a substantial portion of this book. Though not a monetary success for its investors, the colony did produce a stream of migration from the Ohio River Valley to North Texas for several decades. The author writes in his Preface: "Between the lines of this prosaic story of Texas settlement lies a tale of Indian raids and midnight massacres, of hardship and hazard, and of frustrated dreams and ambitions. But the words on these pages tell only of laws and litigation. Despite ambitious plans and great hopes, the Peters Colony was an ill-starred venture from its beginning in 1841 to this present history in 1957.": 09377:

Casa Grande Pageant: The People of the Casa Grande Valley, Cummings, Byron
6 Cummings, Byron
Casa Grande Pageant: The People of the Casa Grande Valley
Tucson, Arizona: First Edition: Soft Cover: Good: Stapled, brown paper wrappers with titles and illustration in black. The booklet is mildly creased and rolled in the lower half and there is a vertical crease or fold mark visible from the rear side of the booklet. Light edge wear and a small amount of foxing and soil is visible on the covers, but minimal. A previous owner's name (Anglo and Native American) is penciled at the top of the front cover. Date and publisher information absent, but 1930 is the date according to Todd W. Bostwick in Byron Cummings: Dean of Southwest Archaeology (also in our stock), University of Arizona Press, 2006, pp. 216-217. The Arizona Pageantry Association formed in 1926 to support plays that promoted Arizona history and tourism. Cummings wrote the plays for 1929 and 1930 and then the pageant was discontinued because of declining audiences and the onset of the Great Depression. A synopsis of each play in Bostwick's book identify this play as having been performed in 1930, which would be the last one for the pageant before it closed. Presumably this booklet was published the same year in conjunction with the play.: 09532:
