Hard Cover: Fair: Covers worn and frayed. Spine is gone. Covers attached, reinforced at the hinges, and holding fine when the book is opened. Interior is clean and well-preserved. Ledger book of accounts for Joseph W. Read's wholesale business (Flour, Groceries and Provisions) at 71 Commercial St., Portland, Maine. Entries found in the book span the years 1866-1876. 624 numbered pages, with no writing past page 327. A sampling of account names in the book include John Loring of City; Jotham Allen of Alfred, Shaw & Haskell; JW Read of Deering; Milton Dyer of Cape E.; EW Kelley of Winthrop; Conant & Rand; Jordan E. Johnson; AD Morse; Henry Small, William Dinnock of Limington; William S. Morse; HW Sturdivant; Dana & Co; Erving Small of Gorham; Edward Libby; Conforth & Jerrard of Pittsfield; Edward Libby; DW True & Co.; Harris Atwood & Co.; Aaron Mann & Co.; Daniel Coffin; JR Foster; James Horton; Union Sugar Refinery of Boston; AJ Ricker; Willet C. Ward & Co. of New York; Kendall MFG Co. of Providence; Lorenzo T. Chase; Israel P. Butter; and Josiah Winslow. There are many more names. The following pages in the book have handwritten family history information. Page 281: Under an account entry for Feb 13, 1867 is a history of Noah Read of Windham, an old Revolutionary soldier. Pages 335-339: Interred in Old Quaker Yard, Windham Cter or Cty; Pages 283-306: History of Jordan Family of Portland, Maine; Pages 311: History of Horton Family (Names and events, one page); Pages 315-319: Horton History; Pages 323-327: Green Line. Laid in at Page 192 is a collection of nine billheads from the owner of the account book, Joseph W. Read, dated 1874-1876. The billhead states that Read was a wholesale dealer in Flour, Groceries, and Provisions. 149 Commercial Street, Portland, Maine is the address on the billhead, which differs from a recorded address at the front of the book. The bills are made out to various names found in the account book. Mixed in with the billheads are several pieces of ephemera-newspaper clippings from much later dates (1900s). Pasted inside front cover is a large label for Davis Brothers, manufacturers and dealers in paged blank books, importers of stationery and paper hangings. Laid in at the front of the book is a set of 10 typed pages, stapled at the top and titled, "The Name and Family of Horton.": 07182:
