Department of the Air Force: 1953: Hard Cover: Good: No Jacket: Some shelf wear and light soiling. Contents include Chapter I. The Antarctic, Chapter II. Application of Photo Reconnaissance and Photo Interpretation of the Antarctic, Chapter III. Keys for Typical Antarctic Surface Features, Bibliographies (Bibliography of Antarctic Bibliographies and Bibliography of Literature Cited), Plates, and Maps. 171 pages, illustrated with numerous black and white photos, three fold-out plates tipped in, and two maps in a pocket inside the rear cover: ANTARCTICA AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE (G.P.O. 037021), a 21 x 32-inch fold-out map with a July 1949 date and a 2d. ed. 1947 date (appears to be a 1949 corrected printing of the 1947 second edition) and ANTARCTICA (H.O. 2562), a 33 x 50-inch fold-out map, circa late 1940s.The Foreword describes the purpose of this manual as an aid to "Air Force intelligence and operations units with one of a series of 'keys' for the rapid and accurate reading and interpretation of aerial photographs. This particular key is intended for use as a subject key for areas inundated by continental glaciers, as a regional key for Antarctica, or as an analogous key for Greenland." A few lines about these keys: The keys in this publication emphasize diagnostic features of typical Antarctic landforms and ice -forms and consist of a photo image and an accompanying written analysis. Chapter III offers a detailed introduction to the keys, followed by sections for each category (subject) of keys: Major Ice Formations; Glaciers; Ice Tongues; Shelf Ice; Icebergs; Snow, Firn, and Glacier Ice; Sastrugi; Snowdrifts; Crevasses; Radiation; Meltwater; Moraines; Mountains; Coastlines; Flora and Fauna; and Human Occupance.: 09400:
