First Bicentennial Edition of Lafayette in America: 1777-1783. This edition combines portions separately published and copyrighted by the University of Chicago: Lafayette Comes to America (1935), Lafayette Joins the American Army (1937), and Lafayette and the Close of the American Revolution (1942), with a final portion added in 1975. A Certification of First Edition is laid in and signed by Richard Poe, who hand-bound this volume in genuine top-grain buffalo leather, with silk appointments and ornamentation on head, spine, and covers in pure 24-karat gold. This book is printed in a single limited edition on 60-pound long-fibre Bergstrom acid-free antique text developed especially for this edition. Type is set entirely in Caslon Cast from the face designed in the eighteenth century by William Caslon (1692-1766). There are six bound-in plates of Revolutionary War maps, which were copied form the original documents and transferred to lithographic plates and printed on 75-pound Woodbine enamel. The spine is darkened a bit, more near the top, and the gilt lettering is faded in that darkened area. Otherwise the book is near fine. The title page is signed by Gottschalk. The copy number (BI040) for this limited single collector's printing is stamped on the title page below Gottschalk's signature. A nice copy of a beautifully produced volume.
