Bound in leather with raised bands on the spine, accompanied by gilt tooling and title. Majority of the gilt is worn or no longer present. Presentation inscription inside the front cover dated 1863 and partially obscured by a bit of scuffing. Foxing throughout the book along with scattered pencil scribbling. Rubbing and shelf wear at the extremities. Rubbing to the covers. The tail of the spine is bumped and has a short tear. Evidence of hinge repair, though front and rear hinges are cracked now. Despite this wear, the binding is tight and square. Two volumes bound into one with illustrations by Richard Westall and John Martin and Caunter's accompanying text on the left-facing page. There is no title page or index of illustrations for Volume I, but 45 plates with text are present. As Volume II continues with Plate 48, two plates (46 and 47) are thus missing from Volume I. The illustrations in Volume I begin with The Temptation and end with Death of Moses on Mount Nebo. In volume II, the page with text facing Plate 91, Belshazzar's Feast, is missing. Same for Plate 92 (Daniel in the Lion's Den). The last three plates and accompanying text pages are missing: Plate 94 (The Fall of Nineveh), Plate 95 (The Vision of the Four Chariots), and Plate 96 (The Destroyers of Jerusalem Destroyed). No pagination, but each verso/recto (text/illustration) pair of pages is followed by a blank pair before continuing with the next text/plate pages.
