Two volumes bound as one, 823 pages. Blind-stamped blue cloth with gilt-stamped decoration and lettering to the spine and covers. All text block edges in gilt. Stain to rear cover corners, the upper corner of which bleeds through to the upper corners of the last 70 pages, diminishing in size deeper into the text. Additional staining noticed in Volume I, pages 309-312. Couple of small tears at the head of the spine and a tear at the foot of the spine. The corners are worn and the endpapers foxed. Hinges are starting to crack and there are a few loose pages. The front free endpaper contains a gift inscription. The binding is tight and square. Stebbing's 18-page memoir starts Volume I, followed by the original Preface to Volume I, by John Newton in 1782. Curiously, Volume I is dated 1845, while Volume II is dated 1844. Verso of the title page for Volume I states: "This is the only edition of Cowper which contains the whole of his Poems in one pocket volume." Illustrated with five steel engravings, with tissue guards, lightly foxed. The Volume I frontispiece engraving has been removed, but the tissue guard is intact. The Volume II frontispiece engraving indicates the engraver is Charles Heath.
