Sherman joined the Texas fight for independence in 1836 and fought at the decisive battle of San Jacinto that secured Texas its freedom. Afterward, he built a railroad, operated a hotel in Galveston, and held the title of General during the Civil War in defense of Galveston. He died in 1873.
